I was at a party and the person pictured here asked me to paint her (she was joking) but I said "OK." This is the first painting I've done which paints people in multiples. I could tell you there's some Lacanian shit behind this choice (split subject!) or that I do it because I'm a twin (how intimate!) but the truth is I just find it an interesting idea, seeing the figure replicated and estranged from themself.
This particular arrangement of figures is based on one of my favorite, if not my favorite, piece at the Metropolitan Museum of Art—Lorenzo Bartolini's 'The Demidoff Table.' I think it's a really interesting piece with a sense of humor. Click here to read more about it, if you'd like. Anyway, I'm hoping the painting has paralleled the humor of the sculpture.
